    At its April, 2012 meeting, Senate approved changes to GGR 1.9.4. In part, these changes
    included a move to circulate PhD theses electronically prior to examination.
    The proposed changes to GGR 1.9.2 Preparation for Examination of Master's Thesis will bring the
    distribution
    method for master's theses into alignment with the distribution method already in
    place for PhD theses. In addition, the proposed changes eliminate the requirement that a copy
    of
    master's thesis be available for viewing prior to examination. This aspect of the current policy is no
    longer in practice and it is not in alignment with policy regarding PhD examinations.
    From
    Preparation for the examination ofa master's thesis shall not take place until the thesis is
    substantially complete and in the required format. See www.lib.sfu.ca/help/writing/theses for

    The candidate's supervisorycommittee shall make a recommendation to the chair of the graduate
    program committee concerning the date, place and time of the thesis examination and the
    composition of the examining committee in conformity with 1.9.1.
    Upon approval of the chair of the graduate program committee, this recommendation, with the
    thesis title and an abstract, shall be sent to the director, graduate records and admissions for entry
    into the University's records.
    The examining committee composition shall reach the director at
    least four weeks before the examination date. At this time, the chair
    of the graduate program
    committee will notify the University community
    of the intended time and place of the
    examination.
    At least two weeks before the date of the thesis examination, unbound copies a digital copy of the
    completed thesis shall be distributed to the examining committee by the chair
    of the graduate

    program committee, andone copy shall be made generally available for inspection by interested
    members of faculty and students? Department rules may require earlier submission ofthe
    completed thesis.
    If the date or place has been changed, the chair ofthe graduate program committee will notify the
    University community.
    The examination ofthe thesis shall take place under the regulations for thesis examination given
    in 1.10.1.
