RE Deletion of W designation for GEOG 453
    DATE March 21, 2013
    TIME 2:16 PM
The Department of Geography has formally requested removal of the W
designation attached to GEOG 453 Theoretical and Applied Remote Sensing,
    effective Spring 2014 term.
The department has indicated that a new faculty member now teaches the
course. Having taught the course once with W pedagogy, he would prefer to
teach it without. The course is already a highly specialized Q course and the
    faculty
member believes the W deflects more students than it attracts.
GEOG 453W was not taught for several years while the department waited for
permission to hire a new remote sensing specialist. There are a number
    of
alternative upper-division W course options in Geography, so majors are not
impeded in their degree progress. Rather than constrict the course structure
with W pedagogy, the program would prefer to focus on the Q content.
Based on this rationale, the University Curriculum Office approves the removal
of the W designation for GEOG 453.

    Dear Alex;
The Geography department would like to request the reinstatement of GEOG
453 (non-W version) in order for us to offer it this fall semester. The rationale
for our need to offer this course is the hiring of a new faculty member who
plans to teach this course as a non writing intensive course.
    Best regards,
    Ivor Winton
