    Full Program Proposal
    Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Contemporary Arts
    Attached is the Full Program Proposal including the Executive Summary for the Post
    Baccalaureate Diploma in Contemporary Arts. In response to suggestions made at the
    SCUS meeting for the
    NOI, we have edited detail related to the process of registering
    students in the
    PBD program. The SCA ensures that students registered in the PBD will be
    guided dirough the process of designing programs with personal attention from advisors and
    faculty. We are an integrated school with clear communication and collaboration between
    advisors and faculty.

    Full program Proposal
    Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Contemporary Arts
    School for
    the Contemporary Arts
    Following the acceptance of the NOI in 2011,The School for the Contemporary Arts is
    proposing a Post Baccalaureate Diploma for students who already possess a university
    degree and want to pursue further advanced studyin contemporary arts. The SCAwas able
    to offer a PBD when it was connected to FASS,but since the faculty restructuring, we have
    been unable to offer a PBD. We have had many individuals approach our school interested
    in this kind of diploma and currently have many second-degree students. Having the PBD
    available will allow us to accommodate new students with interest in our programs.
    1. Credential to be awarded:
    Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Contemporary Arts
    2. Location of program:
    SFU Woodward's/ Goldcorp Centre for the Arts
    3. Faculty
    and Department offering the new Degree:
    Faculty
    of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT)
    School for the Contemporary Arts
    4. Anticipated program start date:
    Fall 2013
    5. Description of the proposed program:
    The SCA PBD program requires thirty upper division SCA credits. Students enrolled in the
    PBD are considered part of the cohort of SCA majors. Advisors and faculty area
    coordinators willmeet with the PBD students individually to assess and complete the
    agreementcontract. As some students will take courses in more than one area,we want
    flexibility in selecting courses across disciplines for interested students.
    Placement is by AIP process (audition, interview or portfolio)
    The required courses in each discipline are determined after AIP process by the area
    coordinator of the discipline and SCA advisor.
    The agreement contract will be individually assessed and completed by the SCA
    advisor and area coordinator listingrequired courses for the PBD.
    Although prerequisites are required to enter specific disciplinary courses, the SCA
    advisor and area coordinator may waive prerequisites on an individual basis.
    Anticipated contribution to the mandate and strategic plan of the institution;

    Over the past year, the School for the Contemporary Arts has been preparing a new
    curriculum. We are increasing the integration
    of our programs, and bringing greater
    efficiency to our curricular structures. These changes include a streamlining
    of our
    undergraduate programs, support for our growinggraduate programs, and unified admission
    and academic policies across the school. A new PBD program willincrease our enrollment
    and improve our advising options for new students.
    Target audience;
    Students who already possess a university degree and want to pursue further advanced study
    in contemporary arts
    Content and summary of requirements for graduation;
    Successful completion of an approved program is comprised of triirty upper divisioncredit
    hours or graduate level courses if applicable.
    Students with a limited background in Contemporary Arts may be required to complete
    lower division prerequisite courses in the
    SCA.
    Delivery methods;
    The thirty upper division SCA credit hours required for the PBD are taken from existing
    courses offered in the School for the Contemporary Arts. The selection and focus
    of the
    courses will be designed for the individualstudent based on disciplinary interest and
    experience.
    Linkages between the learning outcomes and the curriculum design;
    The curriculum is constructed to allow flexibility in the trajectory of each credential.
    Students interested in the PBD will be able to navigate the courses on an individual basis to
    collectthe required units. We want to allow for student designed PBD to take advantage of
    the breadth of disciplinary offerings within the SCA. One outcome could be a narrow focus
    at the upper level of one discipline; another focus might be a cross-disciplinary approach.
    Distinctive characteristics;
    The PBD in Contemporary Arts willserve students from a wide range of backgrounds in the
    fine and performing arts, as well as areas
    of visual culture, art history, cinema studies and
    performance studies. No other program in BC offers these areas in one school.
    Anticipated completion time in years or semesters;
    We anticipate 2-3 years for completion of the PBD.
    Enrolment plan for the length of the program;
    An average
    of 3-4 students per year for 2-3 years depending on prerequisite requirements.
    Policies on student evaluation;

    In line with our new academic continuance policy, students willbe required to maintain a
    minimum grade point average
    of 3.0 on all courses applied toward the diploma.
    Policies
    on faculty appointments (minimum qualifications);
    Allcourses will be taught by faculty in the School for the Contemporary Arts or qualified
    sessional instructors who will be evaluated by full time faculty in the SCA.
    Policies on program assessment;
    The SCA will assess the success of the PBD in Contemporary Arts based on enrollment and
    efficiency of process. We will also evaluate the integration of the PBD students within the
    SCA cohort based model.
    Level of support and recognition from other post-secondary institutions;
    (including
    plansforadmissions and transfer within the British Columbiapost-secondary education system) and relevant
    regulatory orprofessional bodies, where applicable;
    The PBD in Contemporary Arts proposal is re-establishing a previously existing alternate
    entry route for our established programs.
    Evidence of student interest and labor market demand
    There are approximately five perspective students a year that express interestin this kind of
    diploma who already have a degree. Having the PBD available willallowus to accommodate
    new students who aren'tprepared to take the full requirements of a second degree.
    Summary of resources required and available to implement the program;
    None.
    List of faculty members teaching/supervising, what percentage of their teaching
    will be devoted to the program, and their areas of specialization;
    All courses willbe taught by faculty in the School for the Contemporary Arts or qualified
    sessional instructors who will be evaluated by full time faculty in the SCA.
    Related programs in your own or other British Columbia post-secondary
    Institutions;
    PBD programs exist in many faculties within SFU as wellas other arts programs in BC, but
    there is no other PBD in Contemporary Arts in BC.
