RATIONALE FOR INTRODUCTION OF THIS COURSE
Effective communication within all areas of business practice is crucial. However, what makes for
effective communication goes beyond traditional written and oral communication skills.
Specifically, effectively communicating with persons from various cultural backgrounds in a
professional setting has become a key business competency as globalization increases. The
course will focus on developing an awareness of cultural perspectives, where participants will be
encouraged to develop cultural intelligence and improve intercultural business communication in a
    team-based environment.
We do not have a course with this content in our program and we would like to offerthis course to
    address these foundational skills which
will better prepare our students for their studies within
    Business and bevond.

RATIONALE FOR INTRODUCTION OF THIS COURSE
Currently, the Beedie School of Business offers Directed Studies courses solely at the 400-level.
This new course will be used primarily to create an avenue for educating students who want to
pursue self-directed work that is not deemed to be equivalent to 400-level material. For example,
this course will help facilitate the learning of new Beedie Endowment Asset Management (BEAM)
Fund students in the area of investment selection. In the past, BEAM students have covered this
material through a 400-level Directed Studies course. However, the content covered is not
deemed to be at the 400-level and therefore should not be credited as such. Moreover, ifthis
continues to be credited at a higher level than in reality, studentswould be able to apply the
BEAM-based 400-level Directed Studies course toward degree-requirements that mandate work at
the 400-level to be completed. This would create an inequitable balance and infringe upon the
    inteqritv of the deqree.

Calendar Change, Undergraduate Department, Beedie School of Business
    Effective: Fall 2013 Calendar
    Summary of Changes:
Addition of Business 361 to Upper Division Requirements
    Rationale:
In2007, the MIS concentration was revised and students were required to complete Bus 361 instead of
Bus364. This change was omitted from the Information Systems in Business and Computing Science
Joint Major program, and subsequently, Bus364 became a withdrawn course (S.10-158). The current
calendar does not require Joint Major students in Information Systems in Business and Computing
Science to have Bus361; consequently, we would liketo add Bus361 to
the joint major as should have
    been done in 2007.
The following program will be affected by these changes:
    Information Systems in Business and
    Computing Science Joint Major Program.
