SENATE SUMMARY
MEETING OF JANUARY 7, 2013
1.
Report of the Chair
The Chair acknowledged the passing of Geoff Madoc-Jones, Faculty Senator and
Gary Hall, longer term employee and father of Senator Hall.
The Chair welcomed the new Faculty Senator, Elina Birmingham (not in
attendance) and then provided an update on several items.
The Chair reported on the ongoing CUPE, Faculty and APSA negotiations.
The Chair reported on three upcoming events that may be of interest to Senate:
the upcoming President’s Dream Colloquium: Justice Beyond National
Boundaries; Jacques Frémont, the former provost and VP Academic at the
University of Montréal, will be giving a public lecture on January 16 on the topic
of "Internationalizing Higher Education: Adapt or Perish?"; and the Sixth World
Universities Forum in Vancouver this week.

Student Discipline Matters Annual Report (S.13-1)
Senate received the Student Discipline Matters Annual Report from 2011 to 2012
for information.
3.
Suspension of Admission to the Master of Arts in Latin American Studies
(S.13-2)
Senate approved the suspension of admission to the Master of Arts in Latin
American Studies Program in the School of International Studies within the
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, effective Fall 2013.
4.
Suspension of Admission to the Joint Major in Sociology and Art and
Culture Studies (S.13-3)
Senate approved the suspension of admission to the Joint Major in Sociology and
Art and Culture Studies in the School for the Contemporary Arts within the
Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, effective Fall 2013.
5.
Suspension and Dissolution of the Joint Major in Anthropology and Art and
Culture Studies (S.13-4)
Senate approved the suspension of admission to the Joint Major in Anthropology
and Art and Culture Studies in the School for the Contemporary Arts within the
Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, effective Summer 2013.
Senate approved and recommend to the Board of Governors the dissolution of the
Joint Major in Anthropology and Art and Culture Studies in the School for the
Contemporary Arts within the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology,
effective Fall 2013.

Establishment of the Institute for Diaspora Research and Engagement (S.13-
5).
Senate approved the proposal for the establishment of the Institute for Diaspora
Research and Engagement as an Institute for a five year term.

Senate approved and recommend to the Board of Governors the revised Policy
