Dear Sean,
Please find attached a request for discussion at FENVCC, and approval: DEVS 802 and DEVS
803.
This request has been approved by the DEVS Steering Committee.
DEVS802 Selected Topics in Developmentand Sustainability: intensive analysis of a particular
topic in the fields of development and sustainability.
Rationale: DEVS currently has no method by which to mount a special topics course: Instruction would
be by the Director or guest instructor, whether from outside the university or inside it; for example, if a
senior researcher in the China Council would be able to give a course on environmental policy making in
China, this is the method we would use. Students in DEVS 802 will experience an intensive analysis in a
seminar setting on a selected topic in the fields of development and sustainability. which may include the
work of a visiting professor or SFU faculty member. This course is intended for advanced DEVS
students, who have completed DEVS 801. and who will gain a deeper understanding ofa particular
topic/issue related to development and/or sustainability. Students will be able to clearly explain and
articulate how this topic relates to 1) comparative approaches to development and sustainability, bearing
on the quality oflife, 2) drivers ofand resistance to environmental change and development, and 3)
governance at international, national, regional and local levels in environment and sustainability.
DEVS 803 Directed Studies in Development and Sustainability: independent reading, research,
and/or field placement, defined in consultation with supervising instructors.
Rationale: DEVS graduate students are expected to become versatile, and to explore new possibilities.
We do not have a Coop program, but may wish to enable students to do a field placement and get
experience, or to work in someone's lab, etc - this course would be supervised by the Director, or his/her
designate. Students in DEVS 803 will experience asupervised directed study in the fields ofdevelopment
and sustainability. which may include off-campus learning, field placement, research and research
methods, and/or reading. The subject content ofDirected Studies will be decided by the Director ofthe
Program in consultation with the DEVS Steering Committee and the Office of the Dean of FENV. as
opportunities and resources permit. This course is intended for advanced DEVS graduate students who
have completed DEVS 801 and who will gain adeeper understanding ofa particular issue related to
development and/or sustainability.
Students will be able to clearly explain and articulate how this directed study relates to 1) comparative
approaches to development and sustainability, bearing on the quality of life, 2) drivers ofand resistance to
environmental change and development, and 3) governance at international, national, regional and local
levels in environment and sustainabilitv.
