RE:
Suspension of Admissions to the LAS MA
Dear Sheilagh,
Attached is the information you requested, vis a vis the suspension of the LAS MA Program.
Please let me know if you need anything else.
1)
The impacted credential will be the LAS MA.
2] The Program is currently housed in the School of International Studies, at Harbour
Centre.
3) This is offered by the FASS, through the SIS.
4) We propose suspending admissions immediately, but maintaining the program until
all currently enrolled students complete their degree.
5) The program has lost five faculty members in the past three years. None have been
replaced. We can simply no longer continue to offer our courses and adequate
graduate student supervision. We have decided to instead integrate the LAS MA
program into the SIS MA program, where in the future LAS will be a stream within
the SIS MA. We have sufficient resources to do this, and it will guarantee that
students in the future will continue to be able to pursue an interdisciplinary
graduate education in Latin American Studies at SFU.
6) Primary consultations were made with the LAS Steering Committee (which has
student representatives) and all affiliated faculty. All consulted parties agreed that
this was the best course of action. LAS is a stand-alone program, so no departments
are directly affected, and programs with which we have a relationship (Soc/Anth,
and the FENV) have been consulted and are satisfied that our new position in the SIS
is a satisfactory result.
We also expect that the FASS will retain the services of a
Coordinator for the LAS program until all current students complete their
degrees. As of the end of Spring 2013 all current students in the programs will
have concluded their mandatory LAS coursework, and will either be enrolled

in electives or working on their theses. The LAS Coordinator will oversee their
work towards completion of degree.
7)
Admissions to the LAS MA program have been suspended in anticipation of the full
integration of the LAS graduate program into the Masters in International Studies.
8) Alexander Dawson. Professor of History and Director of Latin American Studies,
