FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
MEMORANDUM
To:
Paul Budra, Chair, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Graduate Curriculum Committee
From:
John Harriss, Director, School for International Studies
Subject:
Curriculum changes
Date:
August 15, 2012
At its meeting of June 18, 2012, the School for International Studies approved the attached
changes.
1. We would like to propose curriculum changes to the MA in International Studies program.
Details are outlined in the attached memo.
2. We would like to offer the following new courses:
IS 880-6
MA Extended Essays
Rationale: To distinguish between students in the extended essays track (IS 880) versus
the thesis track (IS 889).
IS 886-2
Thesis Prospectus
Rationale: To guide students in the thesis writing process.
ISi^-8 MA Thesis
Rationale: To distinguish between students in the extended essays track (IS 880) versus
the thesis track (IS £89).
3. We would like to dissolve the MA in International Leadership program.
Would you please place this proposal on the agenda
of the next meeting of the Faculty of Arts
and Social Sciences Curriculum Committee.

TO:
Paul Budra, Chair, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Graduate Curriculum
Committee
FROM:
John Harriss, Director, School for International Studies
SUBJECT:
Major Program Change - MA in International Studies
DATE:
June 18, 2012
A. Proposed program changes
A recent review of the MA program in the School for International Studies by its faculty
members, having regard to the program's relationship with the Latin American Studies program
and to changes in the composition
of the School's faculty has resulted in the following proposals.
We would like to proceed with the following:
1. Integrating the LASMA within the MAIS by making LAS a stream within the MAIS
program. This stream requires proof ofreading and speaking competence in Spanish or
Portuguese.
2. Providing two options for completion: (a) the extended essays track or (b) the thesis track.
This will require the deletion of the project track. Students in the extended essays track
will complete six courses plus the extended essays course (IS 880). Students in the thesis
track will complete five courses, the thesis prospectus course (IS 886) and the thesis
course (IS 889).
3. Adding a new course: IS 880-6 MA Extended Essays.
4. Adding a new course: IS 886-2 Thesis Prospectus.
5. Adding a new course: IS £89^8 MA Thesis.
B. How the changes will affect the existing program
There are no changes in regards to prerequisites and the proposed changes will not have an
impact on students already enrolled in the program.
C. Justification for the changes
1. To preserve many of the critical features of the LASMAprogram while enhancing both
the LASMA and MAIS programs. The two core courses in the LASMA havealready
been cross-listed with IS (LAS 815/IS 815-4 Theories of LatinAmerican Development &
LAS 835/IS 835-4 Social and Political Change in Latin America).
2. The extended essays track willbe oriented towards students who are interested in working
professionally in the fields of internationaldevelopment, governance and conflict and/or
Latin American Studies. Students pursuing this track will have the option of writing a
policy briefing (or policy briefings), a review essay (or review essays), or some other type
of writing focused on synthesis and analysis, rather than original research. The thesis
track will be oriented towards students who are interested in pursuing further academic
studies beyond the masters level and/orwho are interested in pursuing original research.
3. To distinguish between students in the extended essays track (IS 880) versus the thesis
track (IS_&8£).

4. To guide students in the thesis writing process.

SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
Latin American Studies Program
FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
MEMORANDUM
To:
Paul Budra,Chair, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Graduate Curriculum Committee
From:
Alexander Dawson, Director, Latin American Studies Program
Subject:
Curriculum changes
Date:
June 18,2012
On June 18,2012, the Steering Committee ofthe Latin American Studies Program agreed
to support the proposal, put forward by the School ofInternational Studies, to createa
Latin American Studies Stream within the MAIS.
Two courses currently taught withinthe LAS MA (LAS 815 and LAS 835) will become
required courses within this stream.
LAS has admitted a cohort ofstudents for the MA for theFall 2012 semester, but we do
not anticipate doing an intake during the coming year. Itis our plan to focus graduate
admissions within theMAIS in future years. Once this year's cohort completes the
program, we anticipate closing the stand-alone LAS MA program.
