    At its meeting of 16 April 2012, SGSC reviewed and approved a revision to
    GGR 1.3.13 Certificate Programs. The calendar language was edited at its
    meeting
    of 14 May 2012 and 11 June 2012 and SGSC is recommending the
    revised regulation to Senate.
    This gives rise to the following motion:
    Motion:
    That Senate approves the changes to GGR 1.3.13 Certificate Programs
    Effective Date is January 2013

    ENGAGING THE WORLD
    Motion
    That SGSC approves the proposed changes in GGR 1.3.13 to align with GGR 1.3.2.a (Admission to
    Graduate Certificate Programs).
    Rationale
    At the January Senate meeting, the proposal to allow direct admission to Graduate Certificate programs
    (GGR 1.3.2a) was approved. This necessitates changes to GGR 1.3.13. In addition, academic units want
    to create graduate certificates that, while thematic, are not intended to be interdisciplinary and will serve
    students not currently enrolled in SFU graduate degree programs. These changes are intended to provide
    details on the academic content of certificates while ensuring the alignment of GGR 1.3.13 with GGR
    1.3.2a. The proposed changes to GGR 1.7.6 will deal with the transfer of credits between graduate
    certificates and graduate degrees.
    Specific Changes
    1) The removal ofthe requirement that certificate programs be interdisciplinary.
    2) Establishing the number of courses required for certificate program.
    3) The removal ofthe requirement that students already be enrolled in a master's or doctoral
    program. This allows for students to enter directly into a certificate program.
    4) Align GGR 1.7.6 with GGR 1.3.13.

    A certificate program consists of approved combinations of graduate courses completed from at least two
    different departments. Graduate certificate programs are intended to be both thematic and
    interdisciplinary.
    Courses completed for credit in a graduate degree program may be applied to certificate programs. A
    certificate program must include a minimum of four courses and a minimum of 12 units.
    Certificate programsmay be completed only by studentsalready enrolled in a master's or doctoral
    program at Simon Fraser University.
    Certificates are awarded at the time of convocation.

    A graduate certificate program must be thematic and consist of an approved combination of a minimum
    of four courses (maximum five courses) and a minimum of 12 units.
    A limited number of courses completed for credit in a graduate degree program may be applied to
    certificate programs and a limited number of courses completed for credit as part of a graduate certificate
    may be applied to a graduate degree program, (see GGR 1.7.6 for details)
    Certificates are awarded at the time of convocation.
