Fast Tracking of Deletion of EC0N-6EOG Environmental
Specialty Joint Major
RE
DATE
February 21, 2012
We would like to request that suspension of admissions and termination of
the following program be fast tracked:
Geography and Economics Environmental Specialty BA Joint Maior Program
due to a lack of student interest. We have confirmed with the Registrar's
Office and SIMS that there are no current students enrolled in the program
and no "intended" students planning to declare into the program. The
proposal for fast tracking is attached.
The change was approved by the Faculty of Environment (FENV) Curriculum
Committee at its meeting of February 9, 2012 after approval by GEOG at a
departmental meeting on Oct 21, 2010. The
proposed deletion was approved
by the Department of Economics Undergraduate Curriculum Committee on
May 18, 2011 [as per attached e-mails].
Would you please place fast tracking ofthe program on the agenda ofthe
next meeting of SCUS.

Proposal to Suspend Admissions and Terminate the Geography and Economics

Environmental

BA
Joint
Major
Program,
which
combines
a
BA
Economics
Major
(plus the course ECON 260-3) with the BA Geography Environmental Specialty Major.
2. The program is located in the Departments of Geography (FENV) and Economics (FASS).
3. The program is offered by the Departments of Geography (FENV) and Economics (FASS).
4. We propose to combine suspension of admissions and tennination of the program as soon as
possible. There are no students currently in the program, nor are mere any intended majors.
5. The reason for termiiwting the program is insuffident enrollments due to lack of student
demand. According to SIMS, the recent history of graduations from the program is as foUows
(with thanks to the Registrar's Office for the data): 7 graduating students total since 2001 -1
each in 2001,2003,2006,2007,2 in 2009, and 1 in 2011. This may include some double
majors as well, so actual graduates from the joint major be even lower.
6. No special plan for tennination of the program is needed as there are no students and no
special courses unique to this program. Thus, mere will be very little impact, if any, on
existing
courses
and
instructors.

This will be followed by removal of the calendar entry from the calendar and any
information fromthe departmental websites.
