DESCRIPTION:
What is the "Blended" version of FAL? Essentially, it follows the same curriculum as the regular FAL;
however, one class will be held on campus on Mondays, and the other will be online through WebCT, a
distance education learning program.
The Foundations of Academic Literacy (FAL X99) course began in September 2006, offered by the
Faculty of Education. FAL X99 has been carefully designed to meet your needs as a learner, to prepare
you to achieve your full potential in your studies at SFU, and specifically to succeed on the
Writing-Intensive (W) courses that you will take as part of your studies. The course is made up of six
units that focus on different styles of academic writing and how to advance writing skills to university
level. In addition, you will be better prepared to do group presentations, apply advanced reading
strategies and improve study skills.
A successful student in this blended course will be able to keep pace with the assignments and take
responsibility for learning through WebCT as well as in class. All due dates are firm, whether they are
online or in-class assignments. Time will be given to familiarize students with features of WebCT and
get help if necessary.
Please access the class website http://www.sfu.ca/'smbarber/fal.htm
and the WebCT site after May 1st.
