A three-credit course designed to provide background knowledge, theoretical
understanding and skills training for classroom teachers interested in supervisiing student
teachers. Concurrent work with a student teacher is

required.
ELIGIBILITY
This course will be available to any teacher or administrator with a minimum of two years'
classroom experience who is interested in working with SFU student teachers. It would be of
particular value to those who are planning to accept student teachers in spring or fall of 1988.

OBJECTIVES
Participants in this course will:
(a)
critically examine the goals of teacher education;
(b)
analyze key issues in student teaching in relation to the school associate's role;
(C)
be able to apply P.D.P. program objectives in supervision and evaluation;
(d)
assess individual supervisory styles and practices;
(e)
develop supervisory skills (e.g., observation, analysis of teaching, modeling, coaching,
problem-solving, conferencing);
(f)
develop organizational, planning, and counselling strategies for working with student
teachers;
(g)
analyze personal philosophies and beliefs about teaching and learning, and their
relationship to practice.
COURSE FORMAT
This course involves both the understanding of supervisory theory and the practice of
supervisory skills which will help participants work more effectively with student teachers. Each
session will include a variety of learning activities including lectures, discussions, role-plays and
supervisory skills exercises. A high degree of participation will be expected including lectures,
discussions, role-plays and supervisory skills exercises. A high degree of participation will be
expected. Assignments will include both readings and practice tasks.
There will be no
examination.
OUTLINE OF TOPICS
Goals of teacher education; current issues in student teaching; program objectives; roles
and responsibilities; preparing for a student teacher; establishing communication and rapport;
definitions and models of supervision; supervisory roles and styles; stages of student teacher
growth; characteristics of effective teaching; the supervisory cycle; classroom observation
techniques; conferencing skills; encouraging critical reflection and self-evaluation; problem-
solving; preparing student teacher evaluations.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
a.
Attendance and participation in all course activities;
b.
Completion of assigned readings;
c.
Development of a classroom profile or school profile, based on examination of personal
philosophy and teaching style;
d.
Satisfactory completion of assigned practice tasks;
e.
Completion of a final self-evaluation and conference.

will be distributed by the instructor during the course.
FOLLOW-UP OPPORTUNITIES
Education 496-3 (above) is a pre-requisite for the Education 407-5 professional in-service
practicum in supervision. This follow-up course will use the teachers own school/classroom as
the setting for practice in supervisory skills. It will include the following components:
(I)
classroom work: Focused practice in all aspects of student teacher supervision, under
the guidance of a trained faculty associate;
(II)
seminars: A regular forum for discussion, problem-solving and collegial learning among
course participants;
(Ill) enrichment activities: Scheduled activities related to the theory and practice of
supervision, e.g., guest speakers, skill development sessions, demonstrations,
classroom exchange visits.

Prerequisites: ( Commitment to supervise student teacher(s) from SFU during a following
semester.
(II) Successful completion of Education 496 or Education 490 -
DEVELOPMENTAL SUPERVISION OF STUDENT TEACHERS.

availability of faculty associate supervisors. Early registration is encouraged. If you are interested
