    PREREQUISITE:
    Educ. 401/402 or equivalent.
    Music education in the general classroom in the elementary school (K-7) is the
    focus of this course.
    The principal intentions of the course are to allow teachers insight into the
    possibilities for music education within their classrooms and to increase their
    abilities to promote such education (irrespective of their present musical
    knowledge).
    COURSE CONTENT:
    (1)
    an introduction to the development of notation and musical literacy
    (including writing for different audiences and the re-creation of sound
    patterns);
    (2)
    the development of voice skills (including strategies for ensuring vocal
    health in both teacher and pupil);
    (3)
    the use of modern technology for making music;
    (4)
    learning theory, curriculum design and the choice of appropriate resources
    for music education;
    (5)
    an examination of socio-historical perspectives on music education.
    COURSE WORK:
    (1)
    an opportunity to reflect critically on personal musical experiences, musical
    tastes and socio-historical perspectives on music education;
    (2)
    the exploration and creation of soundscapes for classroom-based cross-
    curricular topics, moving from individual to interpersonal and standardised
    styles of composition;

    (3) opportunities to use and make simple percussion instruments (both pitched
    and unpitched);

    an examination of recent theories concerning cognitive development and
    learning;
    (5)
    an examination of recent theories concerning cognitive development and
    learning;
    (6)
    personalised learning programmes alongside collaborative workshops.
    ASSESSMENT:
    Project (student's guided choice) - 50% of marks
