COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with teaching theatre in an educational context. It will develop knowledge of
theatre skills and introduce students to a variety of approaches and techniques for teaching theatre
and doing theatre in schools.
TOPICS
A selection from the following:
• the drama/theatre debate
• the educational value of theatre
• selecting a script
• director's preparation
• interpreting a script
• casting
• blocking
• scene design
• stage lighting
• stage make-up
• costumes
• stage management
• alternatives to traditional scripts
• pedagogical issues in teaching theatre
OBJECTIVES
1.
To introduce students to a variety of approaches and techniques for teaching theatre and
doing theatre in the schools.
2.
To foster an understanding of theatre as an art form.
3.
To develop knowledge of theatre skills and theatrical conventions.
4.
To have students engage in critical discussion regarding the educational value of theatre.
