TEACHING A NATIVE LANGUAGE PROGRAM

This program is intended to help teachers of Native languages find individual ways
to improve their teaching. Participants will learn techniques for assessing and
increasing the motivation of their students, for planning lessons using a variety of
teaching strategies and structures, for grouping students and for making attractive
and effective language teaching materials.
The following topics will be considered:
Making contact with language learners, motivation, the psychology of language
learning
How to increase your students' motivation
Dialogues, classroom language and 'immersion'

. The program will begin with a week-long session from July 20-24, where students

will consider theoretical and practical aspects of teaching a Native language. This
will be followed by a week-long session from August 17-21

credit (as a Directed Study course) will register for Fall 1987. In September, October
and November, one-day sessions will be held (at three school sites) so that
