COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Educational historians have been in the forefront of childhood history. In this
quest to understand more about how children learn, they have joined forces with other
disciplines and taken an interest in similar studies in other countries. As a result,
childhood history is interdisciplinary and international in scope. This course will survey
some of the themes and concepts which have emerged in childhood history in Europe,
United States and Canada. Each class will consist of a lecture and question period,
followed by a seminar. While the seminar readings are largely drawn from North
American writings, the lectures attempt a broader international perspective.
