'The Illiterate of the future
will not be the (person]
who cannot read,
(he/she) will be the (person]
who has not learned how to learn.'
Herbert Gerjuoy
(as quoted b
y
Alvin Toffler,
Future Shock 1970)
'Sell-education' is but one of a number of labels for a range of teaching/learning
processes which are gathering momentum within the educational community. The term
encompasses a cluster of ideas including life-long learning, preparation for the
information societ
y
, self-directed learning, personal power, autodidactic learning,
to name a few. Whatever the label, the processes of sell-education put the
learner(s) at the centre of decisions about how and what to learn and describe a
systematic approach to the pursuit of excellence.
This course will examine the theor
y
and practice of self-education as the
y
relate to
I) personal and professional growth ii) staff development and iii) school
improvement. The course assumes that all three dimensions (self, others,
organizations) are interconnected and that successful staff development initiatives
pay attention to all three and the dynamic between them. The course will identify
the knowledge, skills and attitudes of self-education and present a framework for
participants to identif
y , design and direct their own professional and staff
development projects.
Current examples of programs based on self-education at all levels, K - Adult, will
be examined with a special emphasis on strategies for staff development. Students
are encouraged to attend the SITE public lecture series and selected training
sessions.
Readings:
A Self-Education Resource Binder containing selections from the work of Malcolm
Knowles, Alan Tough, Maurice Gibbons, Gar
y
Phillips and others will be available at
cost.
Assignments:
Assignments will include readings, a short paper, seminar presentation, and two
self-directed action projects on the theme of staff development.
