    Special Topics - Designs for Learning: Kindergarten

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:
    The course will introduce you to a survey of principles and practices of school
    programs for the early years - specifically at the Kindergarten and Year One levels
    in British Columbia.
    OBJECTIVES:
    1.
    to provide strategies for further development of teaching competence in the area
    of kindergarten and Year One
    2.
    to Increase understanding of concepts, principles and theory underlying a student
    centred approach to learning
    3.
    to provide opportunities for the examination of and reflection upon issues and
    individual beliefs related to teaching and learning in the early primary years
    14. to provide workshops that model specific teaching strategies so that they may be
    examined and discussed

    to assist teachers to develop a repertoire of teaching materials that will enhance
    Kindergarten and Year One programs.
    The course will focus on such topics as:
    * discussion of selected issues as they related to, and hold inipHcatior,

    for school programs in the initial years.

    (e. g. child qrowth and developineit,
    multicultural classrooms, early reading, curriculum development);
    goals and objectives of a Kindergarten/Year One program;
    creating learning environments and selecting, organizing, and implementing
    instructional strategies, materials, and content;
    appraising pupil learning, assessing teaching performance, and evaluating
    educational programs.
    The course will comprise of a broad range of experiences (lectures, workshops, seminars,
    discussion groups, etc.) organized in such a way as to model a student-centred approach
    and to maximize individualization of learning.
    COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
    Attendance and participation in all parts of the program.
    Completion of readings, completion of major investigative project, and completion of
    various follow-up assignments.
    Demonstration of competency in fulfilment of selected assignments.
