Grades will be awarded on the basis of continuous assessment, the submission
of a project on a topic agreed by the individual student and the instructor,
and on the submission of a weekly journal indicating the student's reflection
on course activities.
Many teachers, who have no doubts about the educational value of drama, are
reluctant to develop 'a drama program of their own because of personal inhibitions.
It's worth stressing that it is not the intention of this course to make sudden
histrionic demands on its students. Although the course will demand a considerable
degree of participation, this will be achieved by a steady' development of personal
confidence and skill, jiuich as we hope it will happen in the schools themselves.
Students with no previous experience should not, therefore, be deterred from
enrolling. Students will, in addition, participate in a development stage of a
videotape learning package on creative drama for classroom teachers.

CREATIVE DRAMA FOR THE CLASSROOM TEACHER
with Paul Clements and Jane Heyman
3/14" colour video tape cassette
?
-•
The Faculty of Education in cooperation with SFU Publications, Continuing
Studies, is developing a videotape package exploring the use of creative
drama as a central teaching technique in all areas of the curriculum.
Paul Clements and Jane Heyman have been taped working with elementary
school children from Van Horne and Henderson Annex Schools in Vancouver and
in discussion with classroom teachers. Segments of the tape will be analyzed
in terms of the teaching and learning situations portrayed. Designed to show
what can go right and wrong in a class situation where students are engaged in
creative activity, this package will encourage the non-specialist to explore
drama as a vehicle for learning and self expression.
This package will be developed through the participation of practicing teachers
and students over the summer 'in conjunction with Education 1487-14 (see reverse)
and through field testing in in-service activities next fall.
Paul Clements is senior lecturer in drama at Bretton Hall College of Education
in England and will be spending his fourth summer as a Visiting Lecturer
at Simon Fraser University. He has previously lectured at the University of
British Columbia and has been both a secondary school teacher and full tine
theatre director.
Jane Heyman is well known in British Columbia for her work as an actress,
director, and playwright. She has directed productions for Playhouse Theatre,
Vancouver Symphony, New Play Centre, Tamalinous Theatre, Westcoast Actors and
Carousel, among others, and has taught creative drama and acting in schools,
colleges, universities and theatres in Canada and England.•
