Students must register in Educ. 486 and Educ. 487 simultaneously.
PREREQUISITE: Education 401/402 or equivalent.
The course will explore the theory of global education through key concepts
such as the interdependence of lands and peoples, the interlocking nature of
global issues, the interconnectedness of past, present and future and the
relationship between personal and planetary development. Various related
educational initiatives will be addressed such as development education,
environmental education, futures education, education for gender and race
equality, human rights education and peace education. The course will have a
strong practical orientation with an emphasis on active participation.

Instructor: G. Pike
The course will explore the relationship between global education and
interactive, participatory learning approaches. After an introduction to learning
style theories and their implications for the classroom, the course will consider
the following topics: global education and child development, affirmation and
empowerment, co-operative learning, experiential learning, developing
communicative skills, action-oriented learning, feedback and evaluation
strategies, the rhythm of courses, the teacher as facilitator and the whole-school
implications of the learning process in global education.
PRECOURSE READING:
For pre-course reading, we would suggest course members read Earthriçihts by
D. Selby, S. Grieg, and G. Pike, published by World Wildlife Fund/Kogan Page
(1987).
REQUIRED TEXT:
Fisher & Hicks, World Studies 8-13: A Teacher's Handbook published by Oliver
& Boyd (1985).
