EDUCATION 486-4: DRAMA IN THE CLAROOM

OBJECTIVES
This course will develop students' understanding of educational drama as an experience
based process.
It
will provide students with skills in selecting, planning and implementing
teaching strategies for using drama in the classroom. This will include examining the new
Fine Arts Curriculum and looking at the useof drama as a teaching tool across the
curriculum.
COURSE OUTLINE
This course will be divided into three main sections. The first will cover introductory
experiences in classroom drama designed to develop student's confidence and trust in the
group through drama games and exercises, sensory awareness activities, improvisation,
voice, movement and mime. The second section will explore role drama as it relates to
teaching. The connection between drama and thinking and drama and Language Arts and
Social Studies will be explored in detail. This will include such strategies as teacher in
role, questioning, building belief, reflection and story drama. The third section will
provide opportunities to develop dramatic situations with performance as a- goal. Teaching
through playmaking will be demonstrated and the relationship between product and process
will be explored.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1.
Attendance at all sessions is compulsory because of the participatory nature of the
course.
2. Assignments:
a) maintenance of a journal
of
observation, reflection and self-evaluation.
b)
written review of one article on drama in education theory.
c)
a set of plans for a story or role drama.
