Technology Education
In the Summer Session of 1986 the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser
University will once again offer its innovative and successful
Summer
Institute in Science, Society and Technology Education. This
program is an intensive, residential credit short course for teachers from all
grade-age levels who wish to continue their education in topics of Science,
Technology, and the social implications of science and technology as these
are addressed in the current school curriculum. The course provides
hands-on experiences for teachers with computers, tools, science activities,
and approaches to dealing with the social implications of science and
technology. The institute also provides a number of field experiences
Including visits to industrial sites illustrating applied science and
technology in everyday life.
The program provides an opportunity for teachers with or without an
extensive science background to up-grade their understanding of current
topics in science and technology, to gain competency in using common
computer applications, and to develop their skill and competence in science
education and in other related areas of the curriculum: art, music, social
studies, and the language arts. While this course will be valuable for
teachers interested in teaching the new Science & Technology 11 course, it
is not specifically focussed on that course. Elementary teachers from K-7
will find the institute an important confidence builder for science teaching
and computer use. Again, a previous science background is NOT a prerequisite
for this course.
FORMAT: The Summer Institute in Science, Society and Technology Education
is offered as a two week, total immersion, residential experience. The
program will be offered at the Silver Star Ski resort In 1986 as in 1985.

[1

Monday, June 30 and concluding Sunday, July 13.
CREDIT VALUE: The program is offered as Education 486-4, with a
