Participants in this course will tackle some of the non-curricular
concerns of beginning teachers. The overall design can be divided into three
main themes - The self (exploring the partricular demands the initial phases
of teaching place on individuals); the school (its social, administrative,
political, cultural workings); and the system (large-scale factors affecting
education in D.C. and North America). Within each of the subsections we will
explore a variety of particular topics. The course will make extensive use of
resource people from the faculty, university and public school system.
Within the courses general plan, students will also define their own
issues, based upon personal experience and need. Since the course is
intended to make links between the students practical experience and the
university, students will be required to produce work that is personally
useful and useful to other beginning teachers. Students will complete a
major project as well as readings and short assignments.
Some of the sessions conducted by visiting resource people will be
open to all interested 404 students.
