1. Prerequisites
Educ 401/402 or equivalent.

Course Description
This course will introduce students to theoretical perspectives and practical issues related to
the use of computers in education (why should we use computers for learning and
administrative tasks and how do we do it). Course sessions will cover the following topics:
computer hardware and software, productivity tools (word processing, database,
spreadsheet, etc.), computer-assisted instruction (CAI), and telecommunications. Issues
regarding computer implementation in the school will also be discussed; Course sessions
will be delivered both face-to-face and online, using SFU's *Forum conferencing system.
Students will be given computer accounts and training on the use of *Forum.
3.
Objectives
The objectives of the course are to provide students with the necessary skills to use
computers in the school for a variety of activities and to develop a critical view of the use
of computers in education.
4. Course Activities
The first
5
sessions will be face-to-face and will consist of lectures and hands-on activities
at the ETC computer lab. The following
5
sessions will be online and will consist of
discussions and online assignments. The last two sessions will be face-to-face where
students will present their class projects. Course activities will also include guest speakers
and software demonstrations. Students will be evaluated on four items:
