EDUC 401/402
(Restricted to PDP students going on the Fench immersion
program at Laval University)
There is no French prerequisite. There is, however, the expectation that participants will increase their
facility and level of confidence with the language to the best of their ability. The course will be taught in
French and in English.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
• Reading and discussion of methodology of second language(L2) learning
• Reading of relevant research literature and articles pertaining to L2 teaching and learning
• Familiarization with a theme based approach
• Building language proficiency through an interactive approach and modeling
• Planning for inclusion of culture in the L2 classroom (The use of authentic documents)
• Teaching strategies with emphasis on communication
The course will be practical and reflect the Core French IRP (5-12). Participants will have maximum
opportunities to practice the French used in the classroom and will be able to improve their own
language skills. Guest speakers and field trips may become part of class investigation, if possible
according to the group's schedule.

• Philosophy and theories in second language acquisition
• Practical teaching strategies focused on communication and interaction to make French enjoyable
and productive

• Familiarization with the prescribed learning outcomes as set out in the Core French IRP 5-12
• Familiarization of programs presently being used in districts
• Theme based lesson planning
• Micro-teaching
• Strategies for beginning listening comprehension
• Increasing comprehension skills through listening and asking questions
• The planning and inclusion of cultural components
• Use of visual, audio and audio-visual material
• Criteria setting and reporting for French
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
• Attendance and participation in all activities
• Oral presentation of an interactive activity
• Micro-teaching and analysis
• Oral presentation using an authentic document
• Unit Plan
• Establishing a plan for reporting (to include ways of gathering information)
READINGS
Selected readings (research papers, language magazines) presented by the instructor
