Instruction will be given in English and in French
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course deals with a variety of approaches, teaching strategies and curricula for teaching
French as a second language in elementary and secondary schools.
OBJECTIVES
The participant will acquire a better understanding of the theories, approaches and
methodology in the teaching of French as a second language; examine the linguistic, social
and cultural goals of the B.C. Core French curriculum; study and practise teaching
techniques; acquire skills in evaluating second language teaching and learning; improve
linguistic competence and confidence. The focus will be on the practical application of the
above.

• Teaching strategies with emphasis on communication and interaction
• Evaluation techniques
• The Core French curriculum and language policy
• Highlights of the "National Core French Study"
• Your commercial programme
• Lesson-planning/Unit-planning
• Culture
• The use of authentic documents
• The use of games and songs
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
• Attendance and participation in all activities
• Journal
• Oral presentation of an interactive activity
• Report on a teaching method/approach relating to interactive teaching, the
communicative approach, etc.
• Oral presentation using an authentic document
• Design of a unit plan incorporating authentic documents, interactive strategies, and
including an evaluation component
• Preparation of a portfolio of resources
