COURSE DESCRIPTION
Consideration is given in this course to the pedagogical principles underlying the development of
physical education programs for the elementary grades in British Columbia schools. These
pedagogical principles, derived from a theoretically-informed reflection on students engagement
in selected instructional activities, will be applied to matters of curriculum design, teaching
strategy, pupil progress and program evaluation.
COURSE CONTENT
Lectures on the pedagogical foundations of physical education will be combined with practical
sessions in activity settings that exhibit varying degrees of structure. Students will participate in
instructional activities that provide insight into the dynamics of effective pedagogy in physical
education.
ASSIGNMENTS
1.
Class participation - 20%
2.
Students will select one area of study in Elementary Physical Education and prepare a research
report to be submitted at the end of the semester - 60%
3.
Students will prepare one lesson to be presented to the class - 20%
