OVERVIEW:
This course is designed to assist teachers in planning physical education programs for the
elementary grades in B.C. schools. The curricular organizing principles of the course are
threefold:
1.
To provide teachers with a pedagogical understanding of curriculum design, teaching
strategies, pupil progress, teacher evaluation and unit planning;
2.
To examine various practical applications of the theoretical perspective listed in (1);
3.
To explore a particular action research approach which challenges teachers to extend
their professional development in physical education.
CONTENT:
Classroom sessions on the pedagogical foundations of physical education will be
complemented by practical treatment of such topics as creative games, dance, gymnastics,
individual and team pursuits, intramural activities, the integration of physical education with
other curriculum areas, active health and daily physical education.
ASSIGNMENTS:
A research paper on an individually chosen aspect of the lifeworld of physical
education. Guidelines for conducting a particular style of pedagogical research will be
given during the course and pertinent readings will be assigned. A one-two page
proposal is to be submitted by week three of the course; two preliminary drafts are to be
submitted for class critique in weeks six and ten; and a final version of ten to twelve
pages is required upon completion of the course. (40%)
2.
A teaching unit on a theme, concept or notion of movement experience as it pertains to
the topical areas of either games, gymnastics or dance. (30%)
3.
Teach two 20 minute lessons, one each from the areas of games, gymnastics and dance
not used in your unit plan. Please hand in the lesson plan and your analysis of it. (20%)
4.
Class participation. (10%)
