DESIGNS FOR LEARNING PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PREREQUISITE:

Educ. 401/402 or equivalent.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to prepare students to teach the elementary physical education

curriculum in B.C. schools. Sessions will include both theory and practice in the areas of

games, gymnastics and dance, and will help students to develop an understanding of:

curriculum development, teaching strategies, lesson and unit planning, pupil assessment,

teacher and program evaluation.

The assignments will be as follows:

Students will be held accountable for assigned readings.

Students will be required to analyze a modified or minor game and

prepare a unit to teach the skills and strategies required to play that

game.

hey will also be required to prepare wall charts to be used

in the gym to reinforce the concepts to be taught.

3.

Students will be required to prepare a unit in gymnastics including

large apparatus, for a grade of their choice. They will be required

to prepare wall charts to reinforce the safety rules in gymnastics.

4.

Students will be required to analyze a story or poem and prepare

a short related unit in the area of Creative Dance. They will be

required to prepare wall charts that reinforce the concepts being taught.

Due date: August 1, 1987

5.

Working alone or with a partner students will be required to create:

(a) ?

a 2-minute gymnastics sequence incorporating large

apparatus, and

(b) ?

a 2-minute dance sequence.

Each sequence must include one main theme and at least two sub-

themes. Students will be required to establish criteria for evaluation

and submit a written statement of analysis for each sequence along

with a self-evaluation.
