PREREQUISITE:
Educ 401/402 or equivalent. Some basic knowledge of music and performance skill.
Musical activity for the general classroom in the elementary school (K-7) is the focus of
this course.
General classroom music is seen as an experience which educates children to become
intelligent practitioners and appreciators of music of all kinds -- western classical, pop and
rock, different cultures, contemporary avant garde, jazz, aboriginal, etc., -- so that the
children learn to appreciate that every culture man produces has music. Students will use a
variety of acoustic instruments, digital synthesizers and samplers and voice.
COURSE CONTENT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:
a)
acquiring basic pitch and rhythm concepts (basic literacy)
b)
composition and improvisation, including computer recording techniques
c)
computer assisted learning in music
d) digital synthesizers and samplers in the classroom
e) music in various social and historical contexts
f) listening skill
g)
guidelines for sequencing and structuring individual lessons
h) curriculum planning
COURSE WORK INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING:
a) learning how to use different acoustic materials for composition, concept
development and basic literacy skills.
b)
learning how to use a variety of computer programs and specialized music
computers for music in the classroom.
c)
learning how to use digital synthesizers and samplers in schools.
d)
learning how to structure activities to suit various children's needs.
