This course is designed to introduce the generalist and the specialist to the theory and principles of art education. Topics
to be explored will include the B.C. curriculum, an interactive approach to art history and art works, and the
developmental stages of children in art. Emphasis will be placed on familiarizing the participants with creating and
communicating in art through hands on / minds on experiences.
Experience in art is not necessary as part of the goal of the program is to give non-specialists the confidence to plan and
teach art, as well as integrate it with other subject areas. Students are expected to supply some of their own art
materials (see list) and pay a photo-copying fee for selected readings and other course materials.

Visual Literacy - a portfolio of 8 visual responses based on a theme i.e. gardens - 40%

SUPPLY LIST
• Sketch Book (coil bound 9X12)
• Ruler
• Scissors
• White glue (475 ml) and glue stick
• Oil pastels (set of at least 12)
• Water colour paint set that includes black and white (ie. children's Prang 16 colour)
and a selection of brushes (soft and hogshair)
• Drawing pencil(s) (fat primary or other soft) and eraser
• Black fine line pen (Bic micro-metal or Pilot fine liner)
• Paint smock or shirt
• Rags, Plastic bags, Newspaper, Water container
• Magazines, photos, greeting cards, calendars, art books, etc. for image development
