RATIONALE
To introduce prospective classroom teachers to the issues, concerns, teaching methods,
history, curriculum and practice of art education.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1.
To show the interaction between theory and practice in teaching art in education.
2. To develop awareness of art education curriculum.
3.
To develop awareness of teaching resources, techniques, assessment and management
in art education.

CURRICULUM ASSIGNMENT
Design a unit plan for 4-6 weeks of classes. Include in your planning: grade rationale,
learning objectives/outcomes, motivational ideas, teaching strategies, time, media tools,
equipment, procedures, safety, classroom management assessment consideration, teaching
aids and resources, and credits as appropriate.
JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT
Select one or more issues in art education and study at least two journal articles that
identify parameters and concerns relevant to the issues. This assignment will be presented
in the form of
a 3-4 page critique
of the articles for discussion.
GALLERY VISITS/EVENTS
Students will be expected to attend local art galleries in order to become more familiar with
the techniques of art criticism; description, analysis, interpretation & evaluation.
