DESCRIPTION
This course will be run by two English art educators,
Prof.
Arthur Hughes from
Birmingham Polytechnic and Robert Clement, presently the County Art Adviser for
Devon.
The course will introduce students to current thinking in art and design education and
will explore aspects of the theory and practice of art education as it applies to the education
of young people aged 5— 16 years.
OBJECTIVES
1.
To develop a deeper understanding of the role of art and design in the education of
children and young people.
2.
To explore practical techniques in areas such as printmaking, drawing and day work
and relate these to the development of curriculum programmes for young people.
3.
To enable teachers to develop practical curriculum programmes which relate
critical/historical study to studio activities.
COURSE CONTENT
This will include the aims and objectives of art and design education; curriculum
planning and delivery; critical/historical studies and its relationship to studio practice;
practical procedures for developing programmes in drawing, printmaking and ceramics;
the development of the imagination; observation and investigation as essential processes
in art and design; assessment and evaluation.
