Designs for Learning: Art

PREREQUISITE:
Education 401/402 or equivalent
OBJECTIVES:
In this course the student will:
- be introduced to the teaching of art in schools (no previous experience
with art necessary)
- become familiar with the requirements of the B. C. Elementary and/or
Secondary Art curricula
- examine major issues in education/art education (readings; discussions)
- develop art unit based on curriculum requirements/themes
- develop an understanding of the elements and principles of design
- develop a personal imagery, and build a portfolio of art examples
through hands-on art making experiences (drawing, painting,
printmaking, claywork, etc)
OUTLINE OF TOPICS:
The B. C. Curriculum - goals and philosophy; development of balanced art
programs which include the creative and the responsive aspects; gallery
visit and art critique; portfolio building; in-class experience with various
media and techniques; multiculturalism; integration; evaluation.

elementary teachers/students
B. C. Secondary Art Curriculum Guide/Theme Resources (1982) for
secondary teachers/students
RECOMMENDED TEXTS:
A list of recommended readings based on available library texts (S.F.U.,
Richmond District libraries etc.) will be provided during the first class.
