Prerequisite: 401/402 or equivalent.
Objectives:
It is intended that students will:
- develop an understanding of the main ideas that guide our thinking about teaching art in
schools.
- become familiar with the requirements of the BC fine arts curricula.
- acquire some expertise in making and responding to art.
- be able to develop curricula in art suitable for a chosen age group.
Outline of To
The course will focus on:
The concept of art: problems of definition; expressiveness and form; the concerns and alms of art
education; rationale for teaching; curriculum models; children's artistic development; the BC
curriculum for art; making art: a review of media and techniques; responding to art: making and
defending critical judgments; developing art lessons: focusing on themes, interests, ability levels,
media; new curriculum materials.
Course Requirements:

Completion of studio projects (no previous art experience needed)

2.
A paper involving the analysis of an idea central to art education
(4 - 6 pages)
20%
3.
Critique of an art work following gallery trip (2- 4 pages)
10%
4.
Development of an art curriculum unit for a chosen grade level

5.
Final exam
