    This course is an introduction to teaching art in the schools and should be of
    interest to students and teachers who would like to explore the role of art in
    education. Major approaches to teaching and learning in the visual arts will
    be examined through readings, group discussions and practical activities.
    Special emphasis will be placed on the development of imagery and thematic units
    which include art criticism and evaluation, art in contemporary society and the
    elements and principles of design. No prior experience with art is required for
    the course.
    OUTLINE OF TOPICS
    1.
    Overview of the history and philosophy of art education.
    2.
    Children's artistic development.
    3. Elements and principles of design.
    4.
    Theme development: sources of imagery.
    5.
    Art criticism.
    6.
    Multi-cultural and integrated art.
    7. Development of personal teaching model.
    8.
    Resources for teaching and evaluating art, building a personal file.
    COURSE REQUIREMENTS
    1.
    Participation in class activities, projects and discussions.
    2.
    Mid-term (take-home) paper based on readings and discussions.
    3.
    Short assignments on specific topics including a brief critique of a
    work after an art gallery field trip and unit plan.
