Designs for Learning: Art

Location: on campus
Education 477-4 is an introduction to teaching art in the schools. The course should
be of interest to students and teachers who would like to explore the nature of art,
the role of art in education, and major approaches to teaching and learning in visual
arts. Through seminars, small-group discussion, and practical exercises, the course
will involve students in selecting and designing their own approaches to teaching
art. No prior experience in art is required for the course.
OULTINE OF TOPICS:
I. The importance of the arts in education.
A.
What is art? An introduction to the varieties of art.
B.
Values of art in education.
II. Survey of approaches to art education.
A.
Classroom artmaking processes.
B.
Aesthetics and the environment.
C. Art as a way of learning about other cultures.
D.
Art criticism and the development of visual sensitivity.
III. Learning to teach art.
A.
Student needs as a guide to teaching.
B.
Structuring information into themes, concepts, activities.
C.
Recent trends in art teaching: imagery exercises

discussion techniques.
D.
How to build up your own resources for teaching art.
E.
The differences between grading and evaluation.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
-- Participation in discussion and activities, and completion of assigned readings.
- Midterm take-home exam concerned with approaches to art education discussed in
lectures.
- A brief paper in response to a field trip to a museum or art gallery.
- A 5-7 page final paper, applying ideas in the course to a teaching situation
in which you have a particular interest.
