This course is for PDP students who expect to teach Math from K to 9th
grade.
Main concerns will be studies of topics essential to all mathematics
learning and teaching in schools, including how to communicate such to young
students with mastery and pleasure.
The 1988 B.C. curriculum guide states:
"Math is an integral part of humanexperience. Reasoning skills
developed ... are necessary for
all
citizens to function
productively... The curriculum should therefore, develop
understandings based on a sound foundation of concrete
experience."
We shall approach this through the 'subordination of teaching to
learning', using the powers and gifts all participants, young and old, bring to
every lesson. That guarantees growth and acquisition of attitudes and
knowings not previously realised!
Students will be expected to become quickly involved in discussion,
activities, an individual 'special study', and accept much responsibility for their
own learning, investigations, self-evaluations -- vital to all teachers.
The course can not attempt, in 6 weeks, an overview of other approaches
to math teaching and learning, although individuals may accept this as a
special study, comparing what we do in Inter-session with their own biases.
For any questions as to relevancy of this course to yourself, or for further
details, feel free to call John Trivett at 688-6184.
