First meeting, Tuesday May 8th.
This course welcomes students of PD? who intend teaching
Mathematics in secondary schools or who may be asked to teach some
lessons in the subject though hired for some other priority.
There may also be some students aiming at the upper grades of
elementary schools who will find relevance in the course.
The text from which we shall work is the mimeographed version
of the Instructor's book, ... AND SO ON, with numbers, available
at the first meeting, price $2.
?
There will be other readings with
a list provided.
Participants will be expected to be well involved in the
'hands on' activities, in the discussions, readings, homeworks,
in a journal, all included in a study of important problems in the
learning and teaching of school mathematics. ?
Ahead of the course
I do not prescribe exactly 'what is required' for this depends so
much on the people who come, on particular needs and wishes, on the
gifts, strengths and weaknesses that individuals bring with them.
Please remember that grades have to be given, although we shall
discuss the form for everyone's final assessment.
Some written work will be expected. ?
Also some thoughts,
readings and reflections between classes.
The climate of our meetings will be informal though serious,
relaxed though hard-working, enjoyable, practically relevant to
future teaching in Ed
405
or in a teaching position.
?
There will?
be some integration with other subjects.
We have only
12
meetings during six weeks so we shall not
attempt to do other than begin the study of what is needed.
?
But ?
that can constitute a magnificent beginning to improve our own and
?
the country's 'unsatisfactory state of mathematics learning and
teaching.
Please feel free to meet or call Professor Trivett to discuss
any details or doubts:
