EDUCATION 475 - 4 Designs for Learning: Mathematics (Elementary)
Goals: 1. To increase awareness of what it means to function mathematically.
    2. To use this awareness in order to design situations that build
upon the creative powers of the learners.
As a means to heighten these awarenesses we will consider the following:
    - that mathematics is a dynamic activity of the mind that everyone
    possesses.
    - that mathematics can be built on the concrete experiences available.
    - that certain materials (i.e. cuisenaire materials, geoboards, attribute
blocks, fingers) can be particularly efficient in studying a question.
    - that mathematics is not contained in these materials.
    - the place convention and notation play in mathematics.
    - how to bring the mathematical gifts of the child to teachers' interest
    in the curriculum (K-7).
