DESIGNS FOR LEARNING: SOCIAL STUDIES (SECONDARY)

PREREQUISITES:
EDUC 401/402 or equivalent
PURPOSE
To develop understandings and skills which will assist the decision-making involved in
planning and carrying out an effective social studies program.
TOPICS
Readings, assignments, and class activities will explore the following areas:
• What are the program goals, learning outcomes, and curriculum details associated with the
B. C. Social Studies Curriculum? What are the principles upon which the curriculum is
based?
• What instructional resources exist for use with the social studies program? How appropriate
are these resources?
• What are some instructional strategies which can be used to attain social studies goals and
objectives?
• What are some ways of facilitating the integration of social studies with other subject areas?
• How can student progress toward social studies goals and objectives be evaluated?
• What is my perspective on all of the above?
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Keep a journal for the duration of the course. (10%)
2.
Write a critical analysis of the B. C. Social Studies Curriculum. (20%)
3.
Write a critical analysis of a resource currently used in social studies classrooms in
B. C. (15%)
4.
Abstract three articles on instructional strategies. Demonstrate one strategy in a brief
mini-lesson. (20%)
5.
Choose a piece of literature which would be appropriate for use in a social studies
unit. Give a "book talk". (10%)
6.
Design an instructional unit for a topic selected from the B. C. Social Studies
Curriculum. (25%)
