    Education 474, Designs for Learning Social Studies, Summer Session 1980

    Time: Tuesdays and Fridays, 0830 to 1230 hrs.

    Course Description: An introduction to curriculum and instruction in
    elementary Social Studies. Emphasis is placed on instructional techniques,
    skills development, planning of instructional units, and the use of various
    instructional materials and media.
    Course Objectives: By the completion of Education 474, students should be
    able to: 1) State and defend a personal philosophy of Social Studies cur-
    riculum and instruction
    2)
    Describe in detail the Social Studies curriculum prescribed for
    elementary schools in British Columbia
    3)
    Critically examine and evaluate instructional materials used in
    Social Studies.
    4)
    Use appropriately a variety of instructional strategies in Social
    Studies teaching.
    5)
    Plan and prepare an instructional unit with support materials
    6)
    Identify the importance of basic skills development in learning
    Social Studies skills.
    Course Requirements: Students in Education 474 will he required to submit the
    following assignments:
    1)
    A critical review of a text or other instructional material
    prescribed for use with the elementary Social Studies program in B.C.
    2)
    A seminar presentation on some aspect of skills development in Social
    Studies.
    3)
    A set of resource materials to accompany an instructional unit in
    elementary Social Studies.
