    COURSE DESCRIPTION
    This course is designed primarily for practicing or
    prospective teachers of SOCIAL STUDIES. It is oriented
    mainly towards practice-techniques and methods of Social Studies
    teaching and learning. We will, however, also consider the
    structure of the British Columbia Social Studies Curriculum and
    its purposes; the development of children's understanding of
    Social Studies concepts; recent developments in thinking about
    Social Studies; and planning units of study.
    There will be a variety of kinds of activities during
    the course: demonstrations, presentations, presentations by the
    instructor; small group work activities with the instructor,
    developing materials or units of personal choice; student
    presentations. Instructor presentations will include topics
    such as interpersonal communications, newspaper use in the
    classroom, the use of the local environment, values, questioning
    and inquiry strategies, and the use of visual materials.
    Afternoon periods each week will be set aside for students to
    work privately or in small groups with the instructor on selected
    instructional designs - the product of which will be presented
    to the rest of the class at the end of the course.

    Current techniques and methods of social studies will be discussed
    in the light of the prescribed provincial curriculum. The
    following is a brief overview.
    Week I

    -Analysis of the curriculum
    Week 2 -Examination of learning materials and resources
    Reading in this content area
    Week 3 ?
    Planning and evaluation
    -How to ask the right questions
    Week 4 -Problem solving and inquiry methods
    Analysis of social studies skills, activities to promote
    these skills
    Week 5 -An in-depth look at strategies e.g. simulation games,
    role playing, using media etc.
    Week 6 -Field studies and course wrap up and student presentations

    and the development of teacher resources. Students will be
    expected to complete a short assignment in each of the first
    four weeks culminating in a unit project that will be presented in
    the final week.

    (Secondary) Designs for Learning Social Studies
    Course Requirements:
    Each student enrolled In Education 474 will be required to do
    the following assignments:
    1)
    An analysis of the presently prescribed social studies curriculum
    and the proposed draft of April 1980 at least grade level. (20 marks)
    2)
    A critical review of a text currently prescribed for use in the
    secondary social studies program. (20 marks)
    3)
    Select any combination of activities to a total value of 60 marks.
    Optional activities must be submitted by Thursday, June 12th, 1980.
    a)
    a worksheet using at least four levels of questioning to
    go with print, film, or audio medias. (15 marks).
    b)
    a picture-study set, mounted, with appropriate inquiry questions.
    Should be displayed on a bulletin board (15 marks).
    c)
    a unit of instruction on any topic or theme presently prescribed
    in the secondary social studies curriculum. Include lesson plans,
    activities, materials and the means of evaluating student progress
    (30 marks).
    d)
    write a short summary explaining one of the following approaches to
    social studies: (15 marks)
    i)
    as the social sciences
    ?
    iv) as inquiry
    ii)
    as citizenship education
    iii)
    as moral or values education

    e) design a role play or simulation activity. Explain the objectives,
    rules, and follow-up activities. Be prepared to demonstrate the
    activity to the class. (15 marks).
    f)
    design a field study that is not dependent on extensive travel or on

    the metropolitan area of Vancouver. Include instructions for
    students, letters to parents, and activities for student use. State
    very clearly how the study relates to a specific
    grade level
    of the
    curriculum (15 marks).
    g)
    an annotated bibliography of at least 5 teacher resources, 10 student
    resources, and an additional 5 media resources foruse with a specific
    instructional unit (15 marks).
