Course Description:
The ability to read and write effectively is fundamental to success in school. Thus, providing students
with high quality instruction that enables them to become effective readers and writers is one of the most
important challenges faced by teachers. This course focuses on how best to meet this challenge. To this
end, we will explore the research supported theoretical principles that undergird effective instructional
practices in reading and learn about, model and discuss various methods of evaluation and instruction
designed to develop the reading skills of students.

The Reading Process
4. Early Literacy Instruction

Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Instruction

Assessment and Evaluation
Objectives:
By the end of the semester students will:
1.
Have created a year-long instructional plan in reading for the grade level/course you are planning to
teach.
2.
Be able to identify, evaluate and select appropriate instructional materials and methods of instruction
for the classroom based on one's understanding of the phases of reading development, cognitive
processes related to reading, and factors relevant to the context of one's classroom and school.
3.
Be able to collect, analyze, and interpret data that provides information regarding students' level of
development in literacy and know how to use this information when planning.
