COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will focus on exploring the principles and components of a "Balanced Literacy Program."
Emphasis will be placed on developing knowledge, skills and strategies to create real and meaningful
reading experiences in the classroom. We will explore the nature of the reading process and discuss
structures and strategies that promote literacy acquisition throughout the grades. Current theories
supporting the teaching of reading/writing will be examined and related to classroom practice. The
interactive design of this course will enable you to examine and reflect on your understanding about
learning, the teaching of reading and your role as teacher. The following topics will be addressed:
Reading Across the Life Span: Developmental Perspectives
Early Literacy Instruction
The Reading Process: Decoding to comprehension
Novel Study: Literature Circles, Response Journals
Picture Books, Basal Readers & Young Adult Novels
Engagement in Literature through the Arts
Reading and Writing Connections
Reading for Information / Reading in the Content Areas
Assessment and Evaluation: Analyzing readers and reading programs.
