COURSE DESCRIPTION:
"The question of how best to teach beginning reading may be the most politicized topic in the field of
education. One reason is that we all care passionately about the success of beginning reading instruction.
It is the key to education, and education is the key to success for both individuals and a democratic
society." (Marilyn Adams, 1990)
EDUC 473-4 (D4) will focus on the fundamental aspects of research-based reading instruction. What is
involved in an effective, efficient reading process? And what approaches, strategies and techniques
might we use with our students in order to ensure that they will all grasp this "key to success" and be
able to use it.
