Designs for Learning: Language Arts
(Elementary)
Course Description
If children are to become capable and confident literacy learners, we as teachers must
find ways to create real and purposeful reading and writing experiences in our
classrooms. In this course teachers will explore the principles and components of a
"Balanced Literacy Program". Emphasis will be placed on teachers developing an
understanding of how to create and implement rich and meaningful Language Arts
programs. We will explore the six strands of the Language Arts Curriculum - listening,
speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing as we examine the relationship
between theory and practice. We will also consider the challenges of meeting the
needs of diverse learners and how best to engage all students in their literacy learning.
Children's literature will be integrated throughout the course emphasizing the important
role it plays in children's language and literacy development.
Instruction will be organized around: professional readings; case studies; discussion and
written response; small study groups and task work in cooperative learning groups;
literature circles; demonstrations; and opportunities to view and interact with children's
literature, informational texts, and children's work. These experiences will provide
teachers with a framework to examine and reflect on their beliefs and understandings
about teaching and learning in Language Arts, as well as to increase their knowledge
and skills to implementing a successful Language Arts program.
