COURSE DESCRWI"ION
This course will examine the role that language plays in learning.
Using an approach derived from LS. Vygotsky and the constructivists,
the course will involve teachers in creating lessons where student
learning is enhanced by speaking, writing, and reading activities.
The course will follow a workshop format where the participants will be
given the opportunity to apply what is covered in class to their own
curriculum areas or grade levels, and where the participants will be
expected to play an active part in the class and in the design of the class.
Assessment will be based on one project where the participant will
develop a unit using the material covered in the course, an oral
presentation, and a short paper. Evaluation will be discussed in the first
class.
REQUIRED TEXT (other readings will be supplied)
Carol Santa. (1988).
