PREREQUISITE:
EDUC 401/402, or equivalent.
OBJECTIVES:
This course is designed for teachers who wish to examine fundamental
principles underlying the Language Arts curriculum and explore means of
selecting and developing materials, strategies and techniques .
-to create a
rich learning environment for their students. The course will contain
theoretical and practical components, and students will be expected to:
- demonstrate an understanding of child development and curriculum
goals in designing appropriate learning activities;
- examine various methods for developing the communication skills of
reading, writing, listening and speaking;
- critically examine resources for motivating and/or teaching language
skills;
- examine the role of the teacher in Language Arts Education.
TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
-
child development and the acquisition of language;
- the Language Arts curriculum - planning for and evaluating student
learning;
- reading instruction and the writing process as understood in the
"whole language approach";
- ?
children's literature, story telling;
- resources and materials -- texts, films, records;
- language across the curriculum.
