PREREQUISITE: Educ. 401/2 or equivalent
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course is designed for teachers who wish to examine fundamental principles
underlying the Language Arts curriculum and explore means of selecting and developing
materials, strategies and techniques to create a rich learning environment for their
students. The course will contain theoretical and practical components, and the students
will be expected to:
- demonstrate an understanding of child development and curriculum goals in
designing appropriate learning activities:
- examine various methods for developing the communication skills of reading,
writing, listening and speaking:
- critically examine resources for motivating and/or teaching language skills;
- examine the role of the teacher in Language Arts Education.
OUTLINE OF TOPICS:
-child development and the aquisition of language;
-planning and evaluating student learning in the Language Arts curriculum;
-oral language: discussion, dialogue, drama, storytelling, listening;
-reading instruction: word recognition, comprehension;
-written expression: stages, forms, spelling and language conventions;
-children's literature: use of and responding to;
-language across the curriculum: integration.
